Dress Layering 101

As the chilly November weather kicks in, I’m always sad to put away the beautiful, breezy dresses I reach for all summer. But when paired with a cozy sweater or sweatshirt, your favorites can be worn much longer! I’ve found the key to selecting the right pieces is proportion; pairing a flared, full dress with a tighter top, or a fitted skirt with a looser sweater, works well. There’s also the factor of balancing prints and solids. I layered a larger-scale sweatshirt with a striped skirt that draws the eye down. Finally, selecting the right color combo can be tricky, but not if you keep in mind a few, simple tips and tricks:

  • warm v. cool tones: warm tones are fall hues like peach, burnt sienna, and chameleon green, while cool tones are spring hues like aqua, eggplant, and emerald green. Choose pieces that match your skin tone and share similar tones or seasons.
  • black and white: A classic black or a creamy white are versatile shades and go with everything.
  • complementary colors: colors on the opposite sides of the color wheel often create statement outfits with the bold contrast. Some examples are red and green (Christmas colors!), orange and blue, or purple and yellow.
  • pops of color: I love wearing neutral clothes and adding pops of color in somewhere, whether it be a design or an accessory, like shoes or jewelry.

I hope you dig deep into your closet and start matching!

Warmly,
